Calendar

Date

A window showing the day of the month.

Big Date

Two discs for the digits, so the date reads from across the room.

Day-Date

Weekday and date together. The Rolex President made it a status object.

Pointer Date

A hand points to the date on the dial's edge instead of a window.

Complete Calendar

Day, date and month, but it doesn't know short months. Fix it five times a year.

Annual Calendar

Knows 30 from 31. Corrected once a year, at the end of February.

Perpetual Calendar

Knows leap years too. Correct until 2100 without touching it.

Moonphase

A disc tracking the lunar cycle. Standard ones drift a day every 122 years.

Equation of Time

How far the sun runs ahead of or behind the clock, up to 16 minutes.

Time Zones

GMT

A 24-hour hand reads a second zone. Built for Pan Am pilots in 1954.

Dual Time

A second zone on its own 12-hour display.

World Timer

A ring of cities shows every zone at once.

Chronograph

Chronograph

A stopwatch built into the watch. The pushers are the tell.

Flyback

Reset and restart in one push. For pilots timing consecutive legs.

Split Seconds

Two seconds hands, so two things can be timed at once. Also "rattrapante".

Countdown

Counts down to a start signal instead of up from zero. Regatta timers.

Chiming

Alarm

Rings at a set time. Pre-smartphone.

Minute Repeater

Chimes the time on demand. For the dark, before electric light.

Sonnerie

Chimes the time on its own, every hour or every quarter.

Precision

Tourbillon

A rotating cage that averages out gravity. Solved a 1795 pocket-watch problem.

Power Reserve

Shows how much wind is left.

Deadbeat Seconds

A mechanical seconds hand that ticks once a second, like quartz.

Display

Retrograde

A hand sweeps an arc, then snaps back to zero.

Jumping Hour

The hour changes instantly in a window instead of sweeping.

Regulator

Hours, minutes and seconds on separate dials. Built for setting other clocks.

Mystery Dial

Hands that appear to float, with nothing visibly driving them.

Historical

Tachymeter

A bezel scale that turns time over a known distance into speed.

Telemeter

Time between a flash and its sound, read as distance. Artillery and lightning.

Pulsometer

Count 30 beats, read the heart rate. For doctors.

Asthmometer

To count breaths per minute.

Slide Rule

A rotating bezel that multiplies and divides. Navigators, before calculators.

Listing counts are live. Tap one to see every watch on Tempo with that complication.
