Description
Defining Rolex’s reputation for professional tool watches, the Submariner reference 1680 "Red Submariner" remains one of the most iconic vintage sports models ever produced. Distinguished by its signature red "Submariner" text and historical significance, well-preserved examples have become increasingly coveted by collectors. We are proud to present this outstanding Mk IV Red Submariner—an honest, highly original example that embodies everything enthusiasts seek in this legendary reference. Dating to approximately 1971, as indicated by its 2.86 million serial range, this example is housed in its 40mm stainless steel case, retaining strong, well-defined lugs and excellent overall presence. The highly desirable Mk IV matte black dial features the correct red "Submariner" signature, "feet first" depth rating, crisp printing, and open "6s." Its original tritium lume has aged to a rich buttery patina, while the matching tritium hands remain fitted and exhibit light oxidation consistent with age. Framing the dial is a Mk 5.1 bezel insert with the desirable incomplete "4" and hooked "5," which have developed an attractive blue-grey fade over time. Completing the watch is its original Rolex 9315 folded-link Oyster bracelet with the correct 280 end links, dive extension, and a "3 70" date code, dating the bracelet to March 1970. The bracelet retains 10 links and exhibits moderate stretch consistent with decades of careful use. While the bracelet may have been lightly polished in the past, the clasp retains a very crisp Rolex coronet. Recently serviced and running well, the watch presents in very nice overall condition, showing only light scratches and minor dings consistent with careful ownership. Altogether, this is a remarkable Red Submariner and a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most celebrated vintage Rolex references ever produced.
