Description
A fresh catch from the depths of dive watch history, this Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 1680 is a particularly appealing example of one of vintage Rolex’s most enduring references. Dating to 1977 by its 5.20 million serial number, this 40mm stainless steel Submariner brings together a strong case, an attractive Mk II “feet first” tritium dial, and an original period-correct C&I riveted Oyster bracelet. The case shows honest wear consistent with its age while retaining a beautifully full profile, with thick, even lugs and crisp factory bevels still clearly visible. The Mk II “feet first” tritium dial remains clean and free of notable damage, while the original tritium hands have aged to a striking creamy, buttery patina that collectors particularly prize. The dial is complemented by the original black bezel insert, which remains in excellent condition and features a matching patina Pip. Adding to the watch’s historical appeal is its Rolex USA, American-made, C&I riveted Oyster bracelet, stamped with a 1976 date code corresponding closely to the watch’s production period. The C&I bracelet indicates that the Swiss-imported case was fitted with the bracelet in the United States prior to delivery to its original American Authorized Dealer. The bracelet retains all 12 links and exhibits only minor stretch consistent with careful wear over the years. Completing the package is an original Rolex “top hat” acrylic crystal, which remains in good over all condition. Taken together, the honest case, beautifully aged tritium, original bezel insert, period-correct C&I bracelet, and clean acrylic crystal give this Submariner the kind of authentic vintage character that makes the Ref. 1680 such a favorite among collectors.
