About the Family

IWC's Pilot family encompasses the brand's broader range of aviation-inspired watches, from the accessible Mark series to the Spitfire and Top Gun lines. The lineage begins with the 1936 Special Pilot's Watch, one of the first purpose-built pilot's instruments with an antimagnetic movement and rotating bezel. The Mark XI, produced for the Royal Air Force from 1948, established the template that every subsequent IWC pilot's watch has followed: high legibility, antimagnetic protection, soft iron inner case, and a design language that prioritises clarity above decoration. The family demonstrates IWC's range — from entry-level automatics to complicated chronographs — united by the Schaffhausen manufacture's engineering heritage.

About this reference

The IWC Pilot's Watch Mark XVI was introduced in 2006. Compared to the earlier 3253, it's case had grown to 39mm and both dial and hands featured a new design, giving it a more luxurious and less instrumental look. Reference IW3255-01 is fitted with an alligator strap.
