About the Movement
About the Family
The Big Pilot traces its lineage directly to IWC's massive 55mm observation watches produced for the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War — instruments designed to be strapped over flight suits and read at a glance in unpressurised cockpits. The modern Big Pilot, introduced in 2002 with the landmark reference 5002, translates that oversized, high-legibility design into a 46mm wristwatch with a seven-day power reserve. The conical crown, designed to be operated with gloved hands, and the clean dial with Arabic numerals and triangle-at-twelve marker are direct references to the military originals. The Big Pilot is IWC's most uncompromising pilot's watch — function before everything.
About this reference
The Big Pilot 5004 represents the second generation of the IWC Big Pilot's Watch. The case still measures a 'Big' 46.2mm across, whilst the dial and hands are of a slightly different design. From 2006 to approx. 2007 the Big Pilot used the 51110 movement; from 2007 onwards the 51111 was used. Reference IW5004-13 has a Platinum case and a Silver dial. It was sold as a set with the Pilot's Watch Mark XVI IW325512.
