About the Movement
In addition to the conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the 3187 features a 24-hour hand to display a second time zone. This movement is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers, offering greater resistance to shocks and to extreme conditions. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3187 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.
About the Family
The Explorer II was introduced in 1971 as a specialised instrument for speleologists and polar explorers — professionals who work in environments where natural light cannot indicate whether it is day or night. The defining feature is a fixed 24-hour bezel paired with an additional GMT hand, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone or, in its original purpose, to distinguish AM from PM in perpetual darkness. The Explorer II has always been the quieter sibling of the GMT-Master — less flashy, more purposeful — and its fixed bezel gives it a more restrained profile that collectors have come to appreciate as the collection has matured.
About this reference
Introduced in 2011, for the first time the Explorer II used a case bigger than those of most other sports-Rolexes - measuring 42mm. The orange 24h hand is a throwback to the vintage 1655.
