Description

We are honored to present this exceptional Mk IV Rolex Submariner Date, reference 1680—better known to collectors as the iconic “Red Submariner”. This example dates to circa 1973, as indicated by its 3.2 million serial range, and is a truly compelling example of one of the most celebrated vintage sports watches ever created. Housed in its classic 40mm stainless steel case, the watch is unpolished and retains strong, honest proportions with thick lugs and excellent overall presence—exactly what discerning collectors look for in a Red Sub of this caliber. The case frames a highly coveted Mk IV dial, instantly recognizable by its signature red “Submariner” text—an unmistakable hallmark of the reference and a defining trait of its enduring appeal. The Mk IV dial represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of the Red Submariner, being the earliest “feet first” configuration. Its defining characteristics—correctly matched serial range, crisp red-on-white printing, and the distinctive open “6’s” in the depth rating—are all present and beautifully preserved. The matte black surface remains in excellent vintage condition, developing a rich character over time, while the tritium lume has aged to a warm, buttery patina. The tritium hands are original to the watch, and show signs of oxidation. Completing the watch is its original Rolex 9315 folded link bracelet with 380 end links and dive extension. The bracelet retains 10 links and shows some stretch consistent with age, further reinforcing the integrity and authenticity of this example. This timepiece is in very nice condition for its age, with the exception of superficial scratching throughout the case and bracelet and minor dinging on the sides of the case. Altogether, this is a standout Red Submariner—honest, complete, and visually striking—representing a rare opportunity to acquire a cornerstone piece in vintage Rolex collecting.
