Description
The Grand Seiko SBGA413, affectionately known as the “Shunbun” or “Vernal Equinox,” is one of the most distinctive modern Grand Seiko references, combining Japanese craftsmanship, an exceptionally detailed dial, and the unique technology of Spring Drive. Inspired by the fleeting beauty of cherry blossom season, the SBGA413 captures the delicate pink hues of sakura petals floating across water, a scene known as hana-ikada . The 40mm case is crafted from Grand Seiko’s high-intensity titanium and reinterprets the iconic 1967 62GS design with a bezel-free construction. Its sharply defined geometry is contrasted by Grand Seiko’s signature Zaratsu polishing, producing distortion-free mirror finishes across the case alongside finely brushed surfaces and crisp edges. Measuring approximately 12.8mm thick with a 47mm lug-to-lug length, the lightweight titanium case offers a comfortable presence on the wrist while maintaining the substantial feel expected of a Grand Seiko. The pale pink dial is the defining feature of the SBGA413. Its intricate texture is designed to evoke cherry blossom petals drifting on the surface of water during Shunbun, the spring equinox. Hand-polished dauphine hands and multifaceted applied hour markers provide exceptional legibility while complementing the dial’s subtle texture. A discreet power-reserve indicator is positioned between 7 and 8 o’clock, with a date aperture at 3 o’clock. Inside, the watch is powered by Grand Seiko’s Caliber 9R65 Spring Drive movement, assembled at the Shinshu Watch Studio. Spring Drive combines a traditional mechanical mainspring with an electronic quartz regulator, resulting in the characteristic continuous, silent glide of the seconds hand. The movement offers approximately 72 hours of power reserve and an impressive rated accuracy of ±1 second per day. This model is a watch that exemplifies Grand Seiko’s ability to turn a fleeting moment of nature into something tangible. From its softly textured pink dial and lightweight titanium case to its meticulous Zaratsu finishing and innovative Spring Drive movement, the “Shunbun” is a sophisticated and highly recognizable expression of Japanese watchmaking. This example shows minimal signs of wear and comes complete with it’s original inner and outer boxes, dust cloth, serialized hangtag, instruction manual, Grand Seiko Warranty booklet (with undated and open papers). This watch was originally purchased in August 2021.
