Description
Few vintage Rolex models command the admiration and respect of the Submariner reference 1680 Red Submariner. As the first Submariner to feature a date complication and the only reference to display the model name in red, it occupies a special place in Rolex history. Highly original examples have become increasingly difficult to source, making this outstanding Mk IV Red Submariner an exceptional opportunity for the discerning collector. Dating to approximately 1972, as indicated by its 3.03 million serial number, this example is housed in a 40mm stainless steel case that has been previously polished but retains strong, well-defined lugs and excellent overall proportions. The desirable Mk IV matte black dial features the correct Red Submariner signature, feet first depth rating, crisp printing, and open 6s. The dial remains in excellent overall condition, with only an extremely minor area of lume loss on the minute track at the 6 o'clock position, visible only under close inspection. Its original tritium lume has developed a beautiful buttery patina, while the matching tritium hands remain original and display light oxidation consistent with age. Surrounding the dial is the correct Mk 5.0 bezel insert with the hooked 5, which has gracefully faded to an attractive blue-grey hue. The watch is fitted with a Rolex 9315 folded-link Oyster bracelet with the correct 280 end links, dive extension, and a 2/72 clasp date code, dating the bracelet to February 1972. The bracelet retains 10 links and shows moderate stretch consistent with decades of careful wear. The clasp displays a sharp, well-defined Rolex coronet and appears unpolished. Recently serviced and running well, the watch presents in excellent vintage condition with only light surface wear and minor dings consistent with responsible ownership.
