Description
A standout from the classic era of the Submariner, this Rolex Submariner Date reference 1680 dates to approximately 1977, based on its 5.20 million serial number. The 40mm stainless steel case is paired with a desirable Mk II “feet first” Tritium dial, original black bezel insert, and period-correct C&I riveted Oyster bracelet, creating a distinctly vintage configuration. The case shows honest signs of age while retaining a notably full profile. The lugs remain thick and even, with crisp factory bevels still clearly defined. There appears to have been an engraving on the caseback, although it has since been largely worn away and is now extremely faint, with little remaining visible to the naked eye. The Mk II “feet first” Tritium dial remains clean and free of notable damage. The original Tritium hands have developed a rich creamy, buttery patina that complements the dial nicely. The original black bezel insert remains in excellent condition and is fitted with a matching patinated lume pip. An especially interesting period detail is the Rolex USA C&I riveted Oyster bracelet. American-made by C&I, the bracelet carries a 1976 date code that corresponds closely with the watch’s 1977 production period. The C&I bracelet reflects the period practice of fitting Swiss-imported Rolex cases with American-made bracelets in the United States before delivery through an American Authorized Dealer. The bracelet retains all 12 links and shows only minor stretch consistent with careful wear over the years. Completing the watch is its original Rolex “top hat” acrylic crystal, which remains in good overall condition. With its full case profile, clean Mk II dial, naturally aged Tritium, original bezel insert, period-correct C&I bracelet, and original acrylic crystal, this Submariner offers a compelling mix of desirable vintage details and honest character that has made the reference 1680 such an enduring part of Rolex history.
