Description
The Rolex Submariner reference 1680 “Red Submariner” is one of the defining vintage sports watches of its era, and examples retaining their original character continue to be highly sought after. With its distinctive red Submariner signature and unmistakable vintage presence, this particular example is a strong representation of the iconic reference. Dating to approximately 1971 based on its 2.86 million serial range, the watch features a 40mm stainless steel case with the correct Twinlock crown. The case retains strong, well-defined lugs and presents with excellent overall proportions. The Mk IV matte black dial is distinguished by its correct red “Submariner” text, “feet first” depth rating, crisp printing, and open “6s.” The original tritium lume has developed a rich, buttery patina, complemented by the original tritium hands, which show light oxidation consistent with the watch’s age. The bezel is fitted with a correct Mk 5.1 insert, recognizable by its incomplete “4” and hooked “5.” Over time, the insert has taken on an attractive blue-grey fade that adds to the watch’s vintage character. The watch is paired with its original Rolex 9315 folded-link Oyster bracelet, complete with the correct 280 end links and dive extension. The bracelet carries a “3 70” date code, dating it to March 1970, and currently retains 10 links with moderate stretch consistent with decades of use. While the bracelet may have received a light polish in the past, the clasp still displays a notably crisp Rolex coronet. Recently serviced and running well, this Red Submariner remains in very nice overall condition, with only light scratches and minor dings consistent with careful ownership. An excellent example of one of Rolex’s most recognizable vintage sports watches, with the right combination of period-correct components, original character, and honest vintage wear.
