Description
We are pleased to offer this Mk VI Rolex Submariner Date ref. 1680, better known among collectors as the iconic “Red Submariner.” Dating to approximately 1973 based on its 3.2 million serial range, this example represents one of the most sought-after iterations of the classic vintage Submariner. The watch retains its original 40mm stainless steel case, which appears unpolished and maintains strong, honest proportions with thick lugs and excellent overall presence. The case houses a Mk VI matte black dial, distinguished by its signature red “Submariner” text. The depth rating features the characteristic closed “6’s,” further identifying this desirable dial variant. The dial remains in very nice vintage condition, with the tritium lume and hands having aged to a light cream tone. The hands show some oxidation consistent with age. The watch is fitted with its original Fat Font bezel insert, which remains in very nice condition with a deep black tone and light superficial scratching. The original lume pip is intact, although the inner portion is missing its tritium. Completing the watch is its original Rolex 9315 folded-link bracelet with 380 end links and dive extension. The bracelet retains 10 links and exhibits some age-appropriate stretch. The inner portion of the folding clasp appears to have been repaired, though the clasp remains fully functional. Overall, this is a very nice and honest example of a vintage Red Submariner, showing the expected signs of age including superficial scratching throughout the case and bracelet, along with minor dings to the case sides. With its unpolished case, desirable Mk VI dial, Fat Font insert, and original 9315 bracelet, this is a particularly appealing example of one of Rolex’s most iconic vintage sports watches.
