Description

The reference 1680 represents an important chapter in the evolution of the Rolex Submariner, and this 1978 example captures the classic formula in one of its final production years. With a 5.6 million serial number, this watch features a desirable Mk III matte black dial and period-correct Mk VI “Fuzzy 4” black aluminum bezel insert, all housed in the familiar 40mm stainless steel Oyster case. The case retains a strong profile and well-defined geometry, with only light superficial scratches consistent with its age. The Mk III matte black dial is fitted with Tritium luminous hour markers, complemented by matching hands and a luminous bezel pip. Over nearly five decades, the lume has aged into a consistent, warm creamy patina that gives the dial an especially appealing vintage character. The date display remains positioned at 3 o’clock, while the rotating dive bezel and acrylic crystal complete the classic Submariner configuration. The original top hat crystal remains in good condition, showing some expected signs of wear primarily around the edges, consistent with the nature of acrylic crystals and the watch’s age. Powering the watch is its period-correct Rolex solid-link 93150 Oyster bracelet, fitted with 580 end links. The bracelet retains 10 links and carries a G clasp code, dating its production to 1982. Both the bracelet and clasp show minor signs of wear while retaining minimal stretch. With its strong case, attractive Mk III matte dial, period-correct Mk VI “Fuzzy 4” insert, and naturally aged Tritium, this 1680 has the right combination of vintage character and everyday wearability. A late-production example of one of Rolex’s most recognizable dive watches, it remains a compelling representation of the classic Submariner design.
